Relationships That Matter – As For Me and Mine

Relationships That Matter – As For Me and Mine

RELATIONSHIPS THAT MATTER 6

AS FOR ME AND MINE

THE GOD FOCUSSED FAMILY

Joshua 24:15b

But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.

Serve the Lord (covenant)

Our family (covenant)

A GOD FOCUSSED FAMILY ENSURES MULTI-GENERATIONAL BLESSINGS

Proverbs 22:6

Dedicate your children to God and point them in the way that they should go, and the values they’ve learned from you will be with them for life.

The covenant of family is the way God intended us to grow and build His kingdom…

Genesis 1:28

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

To see blessings unfold through generations we have to walk out the covenants of relationship.

Covenants are multi-generational.

Blessings are multi-generational.

Family covenants are uncomfortable.

Deuteronomy 6:1-2

These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,  so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live…

THE PRIORITIES OF THE FAMILY

PARENTS: YOUR PRIMARY PRIORITY IS TO GRADUALLY TRANSFER YOUR CHILDREN’S DEPENDENCE ON YOU, TO BEING SOLELY ON GOD.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

CHILDREN YOUR PRIMARY PRIORITY IS TO HONOR THOSE THAT WOULD GROW YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

How Do We Have A Blessed Family?

Blessed when we have a family who hungers for God.

Blessed when we have families that are pure of heart.

Blessed when we can operate in a state of being peacemakers

Blessed when we can walk through life’s challenges and remain together.

A FAMILY THAT HUNGERS FOR GOD

Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

What is our role? Hunger and thirst for righteousness!

What does God do—God fills us!

WHAT DOESN’T WORK?

Legalistic Expectations

Rules without relationships lead to rebellion.

Grace focussed and not self-focussed expectations.

Lukewarm Intentionality

Jesus said, Hot or Cold: Spit out.

We fight for our commitments even when the fight has gone out of us.

We fight for our children’s minds – we don’t allow the world to pervert their imaginations.

WHAT DOES WORK?

Psalm 63:1

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

You God are our God, earnestly we seek you; we thirst for you, our whole family longs for you…

Missing or broken? – find someone to fill the role – you don’t have to be present to pray.

HELP YOUR FAMILY SEE GOD AS LOVING, APPROACHABLE, AND INVOLVED.

THREE WAYS TO CREATE HUNGER FOR GOD

1)    INVOLVE GOD IN YOUR DAILY CONVERSATIONS.

2)    MAKE CHURCH NON-NEGOTIABLE.

3)    SHOW HOW SEEKING AND SERVING GOD IS FUN.

We are not a Christian family! We are a Christ-centered home.
